by Raphaele Shirley, Rhys Chatham and GH Hovagimyan
The work 3x3x3 is conceived of as an immersive environment. The staging and presentation are related to 3D visualization programs, surround sound and interactive virtual space. The light sculptures created by Raphaele Shirley are physical and ephemeral having variable dimensions and locations. These are distributed throughout the performance area. There is no stationary optimal point of view. The light space is centrifugal. The performers (GH & Rhys) can be located on various levels or platforms or pedestals. Two additional technologies add and extend the experience. For Rhys's music a multichannel surround sound system allows for the extension of spatial sound delays and precise placement of sound areas. For GH the virtual body and performance interface can be presented within an LED cube that represents both the live infrared 3d scan of his body and the virtual performance keys and switches he uses. For Ms. Shirley access to a theatrical light grid can precipitate the precise placement of her light events within a 3D space.
