Jewels of Kvinesdal
Amulti-media sculpture and miniature landscape set on the main stage ofthe Utsikten Kunstsenter's outdoor arena, overlooking the Kvinesdalfjord.

R. Shirley's outdoor art installation Jewels of Kvinesdalevokes a utopian, phantasmagoric world inspired by contemporary andancient architecture, science fiction in literature and film, theVest-Agder Nowegian countryside and by Viking era artifacts and history.

Theinstallation is composed of handcrafted cast resin, silicone, cement, and clay sculptures of variable sizes (from 40 cm to 5 cm highand wide), architectural spotlights and a heated 9 meters in diametermirror-base. The colorful sculpturesevoke utopian dwellings and fragments of ancient civilizations.
Located on theKunstsenter's outdoor stage, it is installed like a miniaturetheater-set staged against the stunning backdrop of the Kvinesdalfjord, viewable from up close and, from a distance from the nearbyhills and valley. The natural surroundings  furthertransform the piece thanks to the reflective surface upon which thecast sculptures sit, jewel-like. As the weather around the fjordchanges, so too does the art work's surface, creating aworld-within-a-world in the fjord's vast landscape.

Jewels of Kvinesdal will be on View from November 7, 2009 - April 7, 2010.
