Acrylic on Canvas 2006
Size 18' x 14' consisting of 20 interchangeable panels.
Modular consists of 20 canvases assembled into one composition of variable layouts.
Inspired by the process of Chinese zen calligraphy, game esthetics and space, each panel was created with single-stroke gesture, horizontally on the floor and then raised to join the group of other paintings vertically and adjacently hung on the wall, forming as such, a larger tableau of assembled pieces. The final composition, like an open-ended puzzle, is subject to multiple possible arrangements.
Using a lead pencil for lines (limits, border, breaks) and a large brush with black gesso for pictorial planes (areas), the transposition of the diverse visual languages or signs on the canvas generate a perceptual tension, an interplay of delineations of space, positive and negative, open for multiple interpretations in scale and form. The canvases’ interplay in the final wall piece generate, beyond the limits of each individual panel, new tensions of line and space, depth and scale. Modular is a puzzle where space and perceptual depth are the riddle, its variability an agent for change and exploration within the place of its inhabitation.
